Welcome back, everybody! The nominees for the 2022 Game Awards are ready for viewing and it’s a really interesting list. I’m going to show a few categories and provide my predictions. Usually, I guess wrong, but that’s part of the fun. Keep reading to learn more about this year’s nominees.
Game of the Year A Plague Tale Requiem Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Horizon Forbidden West Stray Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - In short, Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok are the clear frontrunners and the other games are just a formality. I haven’t played Ragnarok yet, but gamers and critics are hailing it as a masterpiece. Many people believe Elden Ring is the best soulsborne game, but I can’t stand that genre. Overall, soulsborne games alienate the majority of players and fuel the toxic “Git Gud” culture. I don’t believe any soulsborne game should win Game of the Year, but here we are. A Plague Tale Requiem had a lot of praises, although I find it overrated. The story and visuals effects are excellent, but it’s very buggy and the gameplay has major issues. Personally, I really enjoy Horizon Forbidden West. However, I doubt it can compete with Elden Ring and God of War. Stray is a pleasant surprise because it was a creative and bold indie game that was rewarded for such efforts. It’s a controversial nomination for many gamers. Personally, I agree that it’s one of the best games in 2022. A lot of games came out this year, but many releases were quite weak. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 seems like the weirdest nomination because it received middling reviews. Best Game Direction Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Horizon Forbidden West Immortality Stray - Basically, Elden Ring or God of War Ragnarok are going to win best game direction. It’s like Best Director at the Academy Awards. The frontrunners for Game of the Year always win this category. Best Narrative A Plague Tale: Requiem Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Horizon Forbidden West Immortality - This category is tough for me to judge because I haven’t played God of War Ragnarok yet. I would think it has the edge over the rest of the nominees. Something like Elden Ring might have a chance, even though soulsborne games usually have thin stories. I really enjoy Horizon Forbidden West, but the plot is pretty weak. Despite a slew of issues, A Plague Tale: Requiem has a great story. It might be a dark horse in this race. Best Art Direction Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Horizon Forbidden West Scorn Stray - It’s hard to pick a frontrunner in this category because most of these games are quite impressive. Elden Ring definitely has a strong chance of winning, although God of War looks impressive as well. I actually think Horizon Forbidden West deserves to win. It has one of the most detailed and beautiful post-apocalyptic environments in gaming history. Stray also has excellent art direction. Scorn has an interesting and macabre art style that takes inspirations from H.R. Giger. Some people might pick Scorn, but I believe the other nominees are better. Best Score and Music A Plague Tale: Requiem Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Metal Hellsinger Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I would pick God of War or A Plague Tale: Requiem. Their musical scores have excellent craftsmanship. I’ve heard the music from Elden Ring and it sounds the same as everything else from the soulsborne genre. Metal Hellsinger might not have the best music, but it’s an essential part of the gameplay. You have to shoot enemies while remaining in sync with the music. It’s a pretty cool idea. In the end, I think A Plague Tale: Requiem, Elden Ring, or God of War: Ragnarok will win this category. Best Audio Design Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Elden Ring God of War Ragnarok Gran Turismo 7 Horizon Forbidden West - I don’t know why Call of Duty: Modern Warefare II was nominated. Ironically, I would probably pick Elden Ring,e even though it rubs me the wrong way. It has a really immersive audio design, so I can understand why it might win the category. Some people might prefer Gran Turismo 7 because it sound like you’re really racing the cars. I like Horizon Forbidden West, but it probably will leave The Game Awards empty handed. Best Performance Horizon Forbidden West- Ashly Burch A Plague Tale: Requiem- Charlotte McBurney God of War: Ragnarok- Christopher Judge God of War: Ragnarok- Sunny Suljic Immortality - This category seems particularly competitive. Everyone likes Kratos from God of War Ragnarok, but Christopher Judge is probably too hard and stoic for this award. I could picture Sunny Suljic or Charlotte McBurney winning this one. They had particularly emotional and convincing performances. I’ve never played Immortality or watched footage, so it’s hard to comment. Even though I believe Aloy is a great protagonist in video games, Ashly Burch is a weaker choice compared the others actors. Aloy is another character who lacks emotion. Best Indie Cult of the Lamb Neon White Sifu Stray Tunic - Here’s another competitive category. Tons of people are singing the praises of Cult of the Lamb and Neon White, although I’ve never played them. Many people adore Tunic, but I just thought it was arduous, hard, and confusing. I spent a lot of time wandering around lost. Gamers like Sifu too, but it probably won’t win. Stray is definitely a frontrunner because it’s also a nominee for Game of the Year. I believe Stray has the best chance of winning, but Cult of the Lamb or Tunic are also possibilities. Best Action Bayonetta 3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Neon White Sifu Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge - It’s hard to tell with this category. I don’t think anyone is supporting Activision Blizzard right now, so Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is unlikely. Bayonetta 3 and Neon White are strong contenders. I haven’t played Bayonetta 3 yet, but it’s on my backlog list. Honestly, I find TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge criminally underrated. It’s absolutely one of the best games in 2022. Unfortunately, people don’t take brawlers seriously. I would like it to win and there’s a distinct shot, but other releases will have an edge. Best Role Playing Elden Ring Live A Live Pokémon Legends: Arceus Triangle Strategy Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - Most likely, Elden Ring will nab this category, although voters may show mercy to other games. Some people really enjoy Live A Live. I think it looks weird, but Nintendo fans can be eclectic. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 might be strong contender because it has a few nominations and probably won’t win the bigger categories. I’m fond of Pokémon Lgeneds: Arceus, but the Pokémon franchise tends to underperform in The Game Awards. Best Family Kirby and the Forgotten Land LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope Nintendo Switch Sports Splatoon 3 - It seems like Kirby and the Forgotten Land or Splatoon 3 will win Best Family game. LEGO Star Wars might have a chance, but I think a lot of people are experiencing LEGO fatigue. I hope Switch Sports or the stupid Rabbids don’t win. That would be a total joke. My personal favorite in this category is Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It’s a very nice and entertaining game. Also, I’m a little miffed because TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge wasn’t nominated. That just blows my mind. Most Anticipated Final Fantasy XVI Hogwarts Legacy Resident Evil 4 Starfield The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - I find this category fun because it measures the public’s anticipation for next years schedule. Hogwarts Legacy has too much controversy and I’m not hearing a lot of buzz around Final Fantasy XVI. The next Legend of Zelda game is probably the favorite because Breath of the Wild was hugely popular. Resident Evil 4 and Starfield have a slim chance, but I think The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is probably winning Most Anticipated Game. You’ve read my thoughts and predictions.
