Hi, guys! Thanks for visiting my blog again. Today, I'm talking about a really cute restaurant named Farrell's. It's a retro location that evokes styles and elements from the early 20th century in the United States. It's not exactly steampunk, but Farrell's is very nostalgic and takes key elements from the early Edwardian period. I promise to leave a lot of pictures on this post, so you guys can see what's going on. Farrell's seems to scream quaint and old fashioned. You can probably see a lot of old school lettering from the photos. The restaurant has a significant Dixieland and Ragtime feel. In fact, they played a lot of music in those specific styles. They also played a lot of a cappella quartet music. I thought the interior was very clean and adorable with plenty of room for the guests. It's a great location for birthdays, group outings, and family meals. I saw quite a few birthday celebrations at the site. They actually give a complimentary ice cream sundae and sing funny songs for anyone who's celebrating birthdays. Farrell's is a very family oriented restaurant and that's a good thing to remember because a lot of places don't cater well to children anymore. I would recommend this site for lunch or ice cream. The menu primarily has burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, and other lunch items. Farrell's has an enormous menu of cream sundaes. It was genuinely surprising. Do you enjoy chocolate, nuts, caramel, candy bar pieces, fruit toppings, and all kinds of toppings? Fear not. This place has you covered. I'm showing this image because the menu is just like a newspaper. It was kind of interesting. You unfold it all the way and check out whatever looks good. They also hand out post cards with other items from the menu. They have an old fashioned soda fountain! Awesome! It's exciting for someone like me because legitimate soda fountains aren't even a part of my generation. If you take a trip to Farrell's, take advantage of the opportunity and order a specialty soda. I'm sure you'll love it. Here's my Roy Rogers, aka Cherry Coke. I know it doesn't look like anything special, but they drizzle cherry grenadine in the drink. It gives the drink a sweeter taste with a much stronger cherry flavor than a Cherry Coke that comes from a dispenser. I love the soda fountain. So, my lunch was basically a heart attack on a plate. I ordered a barbecue bacon burger with onion strings. The chili cheese fries were an upgrade side dish. You know what? It was super tasty. Their food is really good and I was pleasantly surprised. Dessert! That's a really epic ice cream sundae. It was some type of Oreo concoction. I don't usually have a big sweet tooth, but this sundae was very satisfying for me because cookies and cream is one of my favorites. There's something on the menu for everyone. If you have a favorite type of ice cream, Farrell's will probably have what you want. I think you can also make custom sundaes. Their sundaes are really big and cost around ten dollars a piece. I would recommend sharing them with a friend or relative. If you can't finish, they also have containers so you can throw it in the freezer. Farrell's has a full service candy shop. You can pack different types of sweets and pay for them at the counter. I'm not usually a big fan of self-packing candy stores because it gets pricey, but it should certainly make people happy who have a real sweet tooth. Look at the huge variety. Chocolate, salt water taffy, sour candy, gummies, hard candy, licorice, and all kinds of stuff. They also sell old fashioned soda pop. It's made with real cane sugar. Old school soda is totally different than the modern variety. It's much sweeter and has an aftertaste that's hard to describe. Some people love the novelty and sweet taste. Overall, I found the restaurant very enjoyable. I would say it suits families, groups, history buffs, and people who appreciate retro or nostalgic environments. Steampunk fans would probably like it too. I think it would make a fun date for young couples. The service was really good when I attended. I'm pretty sure Farrell's is quite popular because it was really crowded. Some of my pictures probably don't look crowded, but more people came when I was there. Here's a link to their website. You can read the full menu and find a nearby location. The website also offers details about their history, candy shop, and more. That's all for now. If my blog post is making you feel hungry, visit Farrell's and check them out. Leave a comment if you have anything to say about my pictures and information. Have fun and I'll see you guys next week.

Thanks for checking in again. I went to the Long Beach Comic Con this weekend and it was a lot of fun. Tickets have a very reasonable price, the Long Beach Convention Center is a nice venue, there were plenty of vendors, and it's simply a great watering hole for science fiction geeks. For those of you who enjoy role playing and cosplay, this event would be terrific. I'm posting a lot of pictures and links today, so let's dive right in. Firstly, I want to show some photos of fans in their costumes. Shockingly, I didn't see a lot of people wearing elaborate outfits. Here are some of the cool ones. I talked to this guy for a while. He definitely knows a lot of information about Captain America. This outfit is supposed to be one of Captain America's earlier outfits; back when he was still a soldier. Notice the shape of his shield. The round shield was used a little bit later down the road. I don't know anything about this character, but his sword is quite impressive. Does this costume look familiar to anyone? Maybe you guys can identify the character and series. These guys were great. We have Harley Quinn from Batman or more likely Suicide Squad. She was actually a very popular character at this event. I saw several women in Harley Quinn costumes. The hammer completes the image. Her buddy is a steampunk version of Wolverine. He has the signature claws. Blending superheroes and other popular characters with steampunk elements is a popular trend. Scout Troopers from Star Wars! I actually ran into these guys on my way to the parking lot. There were plenty of additional science fiction fans who wore costumes. Star Wars characters had a big presence. Naturally, there were several superheroes. Actually, Batman villains were a big deal. I saw people dressed as the Joker, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, the Scarecrow, Bane, and others. The Suicide Squad movie and the Gotham tv series might have boosted the popularity of Batman villains. I caught a glimpse of many anime characters. There few a Star Trek fans. I saw attendees of all ages. In fact, at least half of the attendees were older than me. So, comic books, science fiction, and superheroes aren't just for kids. I love R2-D2! There was a motorized one in the lobby. Outside, I noticed several replicas of science fiction vehicles. The photos shown above are from Gotham or possibly the Batman franchise in general. Some of you guys probably remember this vehicle from Back to the Future. These vehicles are from the Jurassic Park films. I don't know about you guys, but the Jurassic Park movies are some of my favorite science fiction and action flicks. Jurassic World was a lot of fun and let's not forget about the first one. The original Jurassic Park was a downright scary movie. There was a cosplay area with several people who sold photographs. I met a gal who uses the stage name Maid of Might. She's on Facebook: facebook.com/MaidOfMightCosplay and Instagram: maidofmight. I'm also posting a link to her website. She was a really sweet woman. It seems like she has a wide variety of costumes and cosplay experience. I met a few celebrities at the Comic Con. Believe it or not, they were the nicest people. I was really glad to meet them. Here's Morgan Lofting who was a voice actor for the G.I. Joe television series. I'm going to geek out for a minute. G.I. Joe was one of my favorite animated shows back when I was a little kid. She played the Baroness who was an agent of Cobra. Basically, the Baroness is a female villain, terrorist, and femme fatale. I think her character is delightfully evil. Morgan Lofting was very friendly with a fun personality. I felt thrilled to meet her. Does this guy look familiar to any of you? This is Adam Baldwin and I remember him as an actor on several television series, most notably Firefly. I was excited to meet him because Firefly has a lot of steampunk and post-apocalyptic elements. He usually plays a lot of tough guys and villains onscreen. In real life, he was actually more of the quiet type. Thanks for coming to the Comic Con, dude! Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of the next actor. My cell phone's battery can only handle a certain amount of photography. I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy Walker and he plays an antagonist on the Daredevil tv series. He was polite, friendly, and very open minded to conversations. Tommy Walker seems to be a huge science fiction fan and we talked about comic books for a little bit. He encourages people to send messages online. You can communicate with Tommy Walker on Twitter: @TommyWalker24 and Instagram: tommy.walker. He also has a professional Facebook page, Tommy Walker: Official. I saw a whole bunch of vendors and artists at the Comic Con. It was really interesting. The vast majority of vendors were either comic book store owners or hobby shop owners. It goes to show that the comic book industry and science fiction interest groups are very competitive. Even though the Long Beach Comic Con is much smaller than the one in San Diego, I was still very impressed with the number of vendors. I spoke to some of the vendors who really caught my eye. Some of them were quite unique. Meet Ryan Meinerding. He's an artist and developer who works for Marvel Studios. In fact, he's their head of visual development. This was a cool interaction for me because I'm such a big fan of the Marvel superhero films. Some of his credits include the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Ms. Martha's Corset Shoppe would probably appeal to ladies who enjoy vampires, steampunk, goth, and similar genres. I think their clothes look great for cosplay. You can find out more about them by clicking on the link below. These ladies are from The Order of Gallifrey. I believe this particular group primarily sells and creates merchandise from Doctor Who. One of their business cards said they're a costuming and prop building community. I'm pretty sure they have more than one branch. This group is called the Bad Wolf Sector. You can check out their Facebook pages. www.Facebook.com/pages/Order-Of-Gallifrey www.Facebook.com/groups/OoGBadWolf I'm also including the link to their official website. Here's a group that will appeal to the Star Wars cosplayers and fans. They're called the Mandalorian Merc Costume Club. How many of you remember characters like Boba Fett and Jango Fett? Basically, they specialize in costume making for those types of characters. Costumes can be fully customized to the client's preference. The owner told me that much of the money goes to charity and I thought it was a good cause. You can contact them on Facebook: facebook.com/mandagalaarclan and Instagram: @mandagalaar. If you want to inquire about costumes and pricing, e-mail them at [email protected]. Here's the link to their official website. Prospective authors should take a look at this group called Ink Smith Publishing. They're an independent publishing company who is based in Long Beach if memory serves me correctly. The owner told me they get several hundred book submissions a year and only accept a small number of them. So, it's very competitive. If you're lucky enough to become published through them, your books will be distributed to mainstream book sellers. They publish a lot of fantasy and science fiction books among many other genres. I was told they don't accept romance or erotica. Click on the link below to learn more about Ink Smith Publishing. Steampunk enthusiasts will probably appreciate this vendor. Baron's Beauties makes parasols, fans, jewelry, and additional merchandise. They make a lot appearances at steampunk festivals. You can look at their products through the link below. Rankinstein is another vendor who should appeal to steampunks fans. He makes really cool poker sets with a detailed steampunk design. It also looks like he created an illustrated book or graphic novel series called Amaranthine. We had a really good conversation, one steampunk geek to another. He's available on Twitter: @vonrankinstein, Instagram: @vonrankinsrein, and Facebook: /SteampunkPoker. I also met two guys from the Star Wars Steampunk Universe. As the title suggests, it's a cosplay group who brings a strong steampunk element to Star Wars characters. Steampunk is very popular right now and people are combining it with other franchises. Apparently, members of the Star Wars Steampunk Universe participate in a lot of charity work and I thought it was pretty neat. The two members I met seemed like really nice and interesting guys. Meet Shaylor Duraleau. His costume is a steampunk version of Darth Maul. Notice that he has an electrical staff instead of a double bladed lightsaber. His buddy in the photo is a steampunk version of Grand Moff Tarkin. The Star Wars fans will know what I'm talking about. You can find Shaylor on Facebook: facebook.com/DLoCosplay and Instagram: @DLoCosplay. Shaylor also appears to be involved with something called D-Lo Cosplay and he's the executive director of Nerd-Con. If you're curious about the Star Wars Steampunk Universe or cosplay, you can contact him through one of two e-mail addresses. [email protected] [email protected] I also had the pleasure of meeting Nathan Seekerman. He's also part of the Star Wars Steampunk Universe. Actually, he was the one who explained the charity work component to me. His outfit looks very impressive with a lot of detail and steampunk elements. Those wings on his back actually flick out and can be retracted back inside. He's on Facebook and Instagram as Captseekerman. Send him an e-mail if you want to know more about the Star Wars Steampunk Universe, cosplay, or charity work.
[email protected] Well, I had an amazing time at the Long Beach Comic Con. Science fiction enthusiasts who live in certain parts of Los Angeles County and Orange County should check it out because the event is annual and less expensive than many conventions. I hope you guys enjoyed the pictures. Leave a comment if you have anything to say about this post. Stay tuned for more blog posts and have good night. |
