Good evening! This year’s San Diego Comic Con included a big showcase from Marvel Studios. Disney revamped their plans for Phase 4 and revealed a road map for Phase 5 along with a few titles for Phase 6. If this sounds confusing to you, don’t worry about it. Disney usually releases their Marvel films in clumps and it seems like Phase 4 is wrapping up soon, paving the way for a completely new Phase 5. I’ll break down the details below.
The Remainder of Phase 4 She-Hulk: Attorney at Law This comedic Disney+ show looks relatively accurate to the source material. The titular character is a mild mannered attorney most of the time, but she transforms into a bodybuilder supermodel when she’s under distress. She-Hulk is the Incredible Hulk’s cousin and it seems like he’ll mentor her to a certain extent, although their personalities are entirely different. This IP tends to be quite funny in comic book form and the tv show might be a lighthearted pallet cleanser for the end of Phase 4. I’m sure it will also have a major feminist theme, so keep that part in mind as well. She-Hulk is coming soon on August 17th, 2022. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever I’m pretty sure the sequel to Black Panther will be the final movie in Phase 4. It seems like Disney is cutting Phase 4 short, most likely because the entire slate had lukewarm reception from audiences. I assume Wakanda Forever will be a very strong entry in the MCU. The first trailer looks promising with a promising cast of characters and the introduction of Namor the Submariner. Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing has a huge influence on this film and I’m sure the final product will be respectful to his memory. Let’s hope for the best. The new Black Panther film is coming to theaters on November 11th, 2022. Phase 5 Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Why does Phase 5 have to start with another Ant-Man movie? That sounds like a bad omen to me. With that said, Ant-Man is a popular character and his next adventure is debuting on February 17th, 2023. I don’t know many details about it, but Bill Murray is supposed to be Modok. Most likely, this movie will be very funny (or stupid) and it might wrap up the main Ant-Man films. It takes a special character to reach beyond a trilogy. Secret Invasion I’m surprised to see Secret Invasion as a Disney+ show, considering it was such a big deal in the comics. However, I’m pretty sure Secret Invasion will be a prologue to a much bigger storyline. Basically, the Skrulls from Captain Marvel are masquerading as other characters. Many of them seem benevolent in the MCU, but they planned a full scale alien invasion in the comic books. I have a feeling the MCU version will differ greatly from the comics and we’ll just have to witness the outcome in Spring of 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 It seems like this movie will be the final adventure with the current Guardians cast. Apparently, this entry is introducing Adam Warlock, which makes sense because he’s a major character in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics. In fact, he’s frequently a member of the team. I have a feeling he’ll have an antagonistic role in this particular film, but it probably won’t last. Expect the third Guardians movie to be goofy, entertaining, and maybe a bit tragic. Some of our favorite characters might not survive in the end. You can watch this film in theaters on May 5th, 2023. Echo Do you guys remember Maya Lopez from the Hawkeye miniseries? She’s going to be the titular protagonist in a summer Disney+ show. Most likely, this show will include Kingpin and Daredevil. The main story points are a mystery, but I assume Echo will be a revenge story. She has quite a grudge against the Kingpin. It might a unique tale, considering the main character is deaf with a prosthetic leg. That didn’t stop her in Hawkeye and I’m sure she’ll be a dominant force in the upcoming show. Loki, Season 2 It definitely seems like Loki deserves a second season, ending on a cliffhanger with larger repercussions for the MCU. I’m not a fan of Loki in general, but the Disney+ show is excellent and it’s setting up Kang as a major villain. I have a feeling we’re going to see Kang, Doctor Doom, and components of Secret Wars, creating an overarching story in the MCU. It’s exciting to see this level of attention on a streaming show and I’m curious about the upcoming season. At this time, Loki season 2 is premiering in the Summer of 2023. The Marvels Captain Marvel seems to be a popular character, although she has a number of critics and I don’t think Disney understands how to handle her character. Unfortunately, Captain Marvel is tremendously overpowered and it was also a problem in the comics. So, The Marvels will feature the original Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel. Honestly, I wasn’t crazy about the Ms. Marvel show. Granted, a better script would have helped immensely. I don’t know if this experiment is going to work, but it might help Disney identify the fan favorite version of Captain Marvel. This film is coming to theaters on July 28th, 2023. Blade It’s time for Blade to have his own movie again. The original trilogy with Wesley Snipes was quite entertaining and a new version should work pretty well in the MCU. Do I believe Disney will allow an R rating? I doubt it and that might not be such a big deal. Blade needs to have a convincing protagonist, great action scenes, and an effective way to bring monsters into the MCU. We haven’t seen vampires or werewolves in the MCU yet, so I’m curious to see Disney’s explanation. I think it has less of an uphill battle compared to other titles. So far, Blade is releasing on November 3rd, 2023. Ironheart We’re getting an Ironheart show in the Fall of 2023, but her first appearance will be in the next Black Panther movie. I don’t know a lot of information about this character, although she seems like a young genius and a female version of Iron Man. Perhaps, I have some details wrong, but this character concept looks promising. The MCU could use a more diverse cast and we need younger actors to fulfill roles that will last for many years. I’m sorry, but there comes a point when the actors age out of their roles. Younger characters like Spider-Man, Kate Bishop, America Chavez, Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart can last a long time in the MCU. Besides, I think it’s time for another Iron Man suit. Agatha: Coven of Chaos At some point, we’re getting a Disney+ show that stars Agatha Harkness from WandaVision. The date is spotty, ranging from Winter of 2023 or early 2024. Either way, it should be an entertaining watch, considering Agatha Harkness was probably the best part of WandaVision. I don’t know if this show will be a prequel or a continuation in the MCU. It’s hard to say. Agatha Harkness seems like the type of character who will have major ties to the multiverse. Daredevil: Born Again Gosh, I miss the Daredevil show on Netflix. They’re bringing back Charlie Cox in a brand new Disney+ show. It will probably be less violent and bloody than its Netflix predecessor, but that shouldn’t ruin the show. Seriously, the Disney+ shows need good writing and we’re not getting enough of it. Regardless, I feel optimistic about this version of Daredevil. It’s going to be a long wait, specifically Spring of 2024. Captain America: New World Order The fourth Captain America film will be Sam Wilson’s cinematic debut as our favorite shield wielding superhero. We had a glimpse of this character in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but the upcoming movie should be the real deal. I’m looking to forward to this film, even though the Disney+ show didn’t impress me. Sam Wilson seems like a good fit for the mantel of Captain America and the MCU needs a fresh direction anyway. New World Order should release on May 3rd, 2024. Thunderbolts I believe a Thunderbolts movie is a really weird decision. Do we actually need another Suicide Squad film? That’s basically what we’re getting from this IP. I assume it will feature Baron Zemo and other antagonistic characters who will band together as antiheroes for one escapade. A Disney+ show makes more sense, but that’s not the case. You never know. It might surprise me and become an awesome experience. Expect Thunderbolts to premiere on July 6th, 2024. Part of Phase 6 Fantastic Four Apparently, Phase 6 is beginning with a brand new Fantastic Four adventure. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Marvel’s first family and they’re severely misrepresented in cinema. Hopefully, the MCU will have a more faithful and enjoyable adaptation. I don’t mind if the story is comic book accurate, but the characters need to feel like the Fantastic Four team. This film will debut on November 9th, 2024. Good things are worth the wait. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty We’re not getting a new Avengers movie until May 2nd, 2025. I guess Kang from the Loki series is going to be a primary antagonist in several films. He’s never been one of my favorite villains, but this choice makes sense because of the multiverse situation. Everyone should expect a completely different team of Avengers in this film. The days of Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye are finished. Viewers need to accept it, even though the MCU is introducing many universes. Avengers: Secret Wars I feel like the MCU is getting really stuffed. We’re getting Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four and Kang in the next Avengers movie. Do we really have room for Secret Wars? There was a time when I had complete faith in Disney’s MCU, but cracks are starting to show. However, I’m not giving up any time soon. The main story arch might work fabulously during the next several years. It’s hard to predict these elements. Disney has enough confidence to show these titles and it’s a good sign. What do you think about the current MCU lineup? I think it looks very interesting, but we should expect changes. The old MCU days are done forever. There was a clear roadmap with great characters and decent writing. Now Disney is just checking boxes and they’ll make changes to suit the dollar bill. They altered Phase 4 significantly, which means it could happen again, So, enjoy this lineup while it lasts. Leave a comment if you have anything to say about the MCU’s current situation. I haven’t decided next week’s post yet, but it should be a good one. Take care of yourselves and have a good night.
