I hope you guys had a nice holiday! It's time to review the final installment of the Skywalker saga in the Star Wars universe. The Rise of Skywalker is the grand finale, but it's very divisive among critics, hardcore Star Wars fans, and casual moviegoers. What did I think? Keep reading to find out. Here's a short plot synopsis. Emperor Palpatine has returned while the Resistance is fighting the First Order. Apparently, the Emperor has been pulling the strings throughout this new trilogy. Rey, Finn, and Poe embark on a journey to stop the rising Empire once and for all. However, Kylo Ren plans to stop our heroes while overtaking the throne for himself. Who's going to survive this final chapter in the Skywalker saga? The answers might surprise you.
I have plenty of positive comments about this movie. The Rise of Skywalker has great entertainment value with really fun sci-fi elements and action scenes. It's returning to form in some ways while introducing new elements to the series. This film runs for nearly two and a half hours, but it didn't feel particularly long. The Rise of Skywalker includes a multitude of creatures, lightsaber duels, space battles, and other classic Star Wars elements. It also answers some questions that were causing issues in the previous films. Overall, it's a nice conclusion to the new trilogy. Most of the characters were well developed and entertaining. Kylo Ren gets better in each movie. He's very complex and conflicted. I'm not going to mention spoilers, but many viewers will probably appreciate him better in this film. Rey is becoming a really strong protagonist and female role model. She displays a strong will, determination, compassion, and a really interesting connection to the Force. Her lightsaber skills are really cool and I'm quickly becoming a fan of her character. Finn and Poe have major improvements in this movie as well. They're witty and brave with a lot more character development than the previous installments. In a way, Rey, Finn, and Poe reminded me of Luke, Leia, and Han from the original trilogy. The other characters had supporting roles, but that's okay. Even the supporting characters were perfectly fine. Plus, we can't forget about Chewie and the droids. They were awesome too. Let's give some credit to John Williams for making another great musical score. I love the music in this film. It has many homages to the previous installments, including the original trilogy and prequels. Essentially, the score is perfect for a Star Wars movie. The franchise is very stylized and fans expect certain things from the music. So, it might not be the most original score in the world, but the music was still completely satisfying and appropriate. I suppose you want to know about the visual effects. Most of the VFX were excellent, but the some of the green screen elements were awkward. I'm not just talking about the scenes with Leia. Multiple scenes had wonky green screens. But overall, the visual effects were pretty good. In fact, I would say they were much better than most films in 2019. The movie is totally fine, but it's probably my least favorite Star Wars film under the Disney brand. I really enjoy The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and the spinoff movies. For that matter, I also enjoy The Mandalorian tv show on Disney+. But The Rise of Skywalker is significantly more convoluted and strange compared to the other films. It introduces many elements to the Force and general Star Wars mythology. I noticed a ton of plot holes and conveniences. Your mind needs to be completely blank or the story will be confusing. I don't mind seeing new elements or risks in the Star Wars series, but the situation was quite excessive. By the way, adding an extra film won't help. A quartet won't make this movie less confusing. Will this movie upset hardcore Star Wars fans? Possibly. It depends on the elements that matter to you the most. The filmmakers are adding a ton of material to the Star Wars canon and the fan service is downright shameless. Usually, I appreciate fan service, but major elements in this movie seemed overboard. I suppose J.J. Abrams is trying to bring back fans who were angry about The Last Jedi. That's fine, but he got carried away. Also, Disney is setting up a lot of material for future work. Stay tuned for more films, tv shows, video games, and books for sale at Target. Why? Because Disney is using Star Wars to make a lot of money. It's really hard to argue against the cash grab stereotype. In the end, I would say Star Wars fans should see this movie in theaters. IMAX and other deluxe screens are the best options. The Rise of Skywalker is a very cinematic experience and quite fun. Most importantly, it's the end of the current Star Wars storyline. However, I don't find this film accessible to casual moviegoers. Audiences are going to be completely lost if they don't have really strong knowledge about the Star Wars movies. It's a mixed bag. Have you seen The Rise of Skywalker yet? Go ahead and leave a comment. I don't even mind if you hated it. Just be honest. My cinematic experience in 2019 is officially done! After New Year's, I'm going to rank each movie I reviewed from worst to best. You might be surprised. A lot of major films didn't reach the top ten. You'll just have to wait until next weekend. I hope you had a great Christmas and enjoy the New Year as well. Peace!
