It’s already summer! I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. Anyway, the summer season is going to be huge for gaming news across all platforms. We’re getting a new PlayStation State of Play on Thursday, June 2nd at 3:00 p.m., PST. It’s going to be thirty minutes long, which means Sony has quite a while to showcase their newest content. Here are some of my predictions.
Major News for VR Support on the PlayStation 5 Sony already mentioned VR as part of the upcoming State of Play. I’m not a fan of VR, but it will probably be the biggest highlight of the thirty minute presentation. Sony will probably discuss specs, new features, PS5 support, and a general release window. They might also mention a few exclusive games for the new VR system. It would be nice if they can figure out a way to make VR more accessible to people who get motion sickness, but that’s probably an unrealistic expectation. More Titles on PlayStation Plus At the moment, we know a partial list of games that are coming to the revamped version of PlayStation Plus. It would make sense for Sony to announce more titles. Unfortunately, we’re not getting day one releases on any tier, but they can add games to the repertoire. It doesn’t seem like PlayStation Plus will be a direct competitor to Xbox Game Pass, but certain tiers might be a decent option for people who enjoy classic releases. A Release Date for God of War: Ragnarok It makes perfect sense to announce a release date for the new God of War game. Supposedly, it’s still on track for a 2022 release and it was already delayed from the 2021 schedule. An earlier State of Play showed a gameplay trailer with impressive footage, so I can’t imagine another delay unless the studio is having difficulties. Knock on wood for this one. News for Part 2 of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Honestly, I’ve never cared about the Final Fantasy series because turn based mechanics aren’t my jam. The remake of Final Fantasy VII eliminated turn based combat in favor of real time gameplay, but I wasn’t getting started with such a huge franchise. Regardless, I could picture Sony releasing details about the next chapter in Final Fantasy VII. For some reason, the remake series was going to split the original game into three brand new releases. It doesn’t make sense to me, but that’s potentially the plan. This State of Play is supposed to showcase a number of third party games, which could include titles from Square Enix, such as Final Fantasy VII. A Trailer for Final Fantasy XVI Square Enix might have a big showing at next week’s State of Play. If we don’t see anything for Final Fantasy VII, maybe Final Fantasy XVI will make an entrance. It’s been in development for quite some time and we haven’t seen anything new for a while. Therefore, some type of announcement, including a new trailer, makes sense. The Final Fantasy series has a huge fanbase and I assume Sony will want to keep them interested. Waiting too long can disenchant audiences and Sony has smarter marketing strategies than some companies. A Release Date for Stray A crazy cat lady like me is going to be biased. However, I’m thinking logically here. This post-apocalyptic cat game was already delayed for a year and recent trailers show major gameplay. It’s being created by a small studio, so I can imagine lengthier development. This game is going to be a PlayStation exclusive and it’s coming from a third party developer. Overall, Stray fits the description of Thursday’s Stay of Play perfectly. I guess we’ll see what happens. An Exclusive Silent Hill Game on PlayStation 5 Rumor has it, a new Silent Hill game is in the works for PlayStation consoles. This one is a long shot, but Sony could announce either a reboot or continuation in the current Silent Hill canon. Also, I presume the next Silent Hill entry will be exclusive to the PS5. It probably won’t be a cross-gen release. Unfortunately, the PS4 is running on borrowed time, mostly due to the chip shortage. Pretty soon, Sony will phase it out in favor of the PlayStation 5. A Release Date for Hogwarts Legacy Sony is investing a lot of advertising for Hogwarts Legacy, even though it’s a cross platform title. So far, Warner Bros. Interactive is claiming a holiday release window and they already showcased a lot of gameplay and specific details. In fact, Sony had a twenty minute State of Play for this single game. It seems like a release date would be the next logical step. Keep in mind, they still might delay this project. I think we’re getting a release date for either Winter of 2022 or Spring of 2023. A New Trailer for Spider-Man 2 The previous Spider-Man games were a massive hit and fans are drooling for more information about this anticipated sequel. Sony released a very short teaser last year and a lengthier story trailer doesn’t sound unreasonable. Publishers need to market their games really far in advance and we should see more footage in the near future if Spider-Man 2 is actually releasing next year. An Announcement for the Remake of Resident Evil 4 Here’s another long shot, but an announcement for the remake of Resident Evil 4 seems like a good idea. I’ve been hearing rumors about this game for quite some time and we already had remakes of RE2 and RE3. Also, Capcom does a lot of their marketing through Sony anyway. I’m pretty sure Resident Evil 9 is really far down the pipeline, so a remake of Resident Evil 4 would be a huge win for Sony and the next logical step for Capcom. Those are my predictions. We’ll be lucky if any of my choices come true, but I can dream. What do you think Sony will announce this summer? Leave a comment with your thoughts, predictions, and complaints. Due to unexpected and tragic events that continue happening this year on a global level, I just want everyone to keep their chins up, think positively, and support each other. I genuinely believe most people could use some encouragement and positive vibes right now. God bless and enjoy the rest of the Memorial Day weekend!
