Welcome back, gaming fans! People all over the world are spending a lot of time at home, and yet, the new game consoles are still difficult to find. Sony and Microsoft need to get their act together! Today, I'm reviewing several games that are available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. After all, I'm sure many of you still can't get ahold of the PlayStation 5 0r Xbox Series X. But don't give up! Keep trying! Let's see what I thought about the following games. Thank goodness Telltale Studios is still around! The Wolf Among Us is a great combination of modern noire and dark fantasy. It's a graphic adventure that chronicles fairy tale characters in the real world. This game is dark and interesting with a really good mystery. I appreciate the comic book style animation and solid entertainment value. It uses quick time events during the actions scenes and includes complex characters who are surprisingly relatable. I think it's one of the better graphic adventures on the market. The Wolf Among Us has a few issues. Most importantly, I encountered multiple glitches. Sometimes, the story progression gets stuck and I had to restart at the most recent checkpoint. Supposedly, the player's choices alter the story in graphic adventures, but I'm not sure if that's true in The Wolf Among Us. Poor decisions might change the ending, but it seems like the overall story moves on a specific track. Ultimately, this game is quite strong and it should appeal to players who appreciate a good story. I believe it might even appeal to gamers who prefer more combat. It might be difficult to find new copies, but I'm sure many of you will just purchase digital versions anyway. Let's move on to Assassin's Creed: Rogue Remastered. It features a member of the Brotherhood who defected against his group and joined the Templars. I don't understand why Ubisoft made this game. It doesn't seem to fit very well in the main Assassin's Creed storyline and the gameplay is disappointing. However, I'm sure hardcore fans of the franchise will enjoy it anyway. This game includes many of the typical Assassin's Creed elements and the world building is quite lovely. Beyond that, I don't get the appeal. The controls are terrible, the plot is bland, the gameplay is inferior to predecessors like Black Flag, and the characters don't bring anything interesting to the series. It just seems like Ubisoft churned out another game to make a profit. I would only recommend this game for Assassin's Creed collectors. Some gamers want the entire series, but just remember, Rogue is one of the weaker mainline installments. The Doom: Slayer's Collection is a good option for gamers who love first person shooters. It's an inexpensive collection that includes the original Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, Doom 3, and the Doom remake. All of these games are fun with quick pacing, loads of monsters, powerful guns, and strong entertainment value. If you want to fight demons in space, the Slayer's Collection is the right choice. Some gamers love the entire Doom franchise, but I only connect with the remake from 2016. The other games are fine and retro gaming isn't the issue, but the maps aren't very clear. In fact, Doom 3 doesn't have a map at all. I don't have the best sense of direction, but it seems really easy to get lost in the Doom games regardless. None of the games have good storylines, which shouldn't be a surprise. Also, many of the boss fights are excessively frustrating. Here's my honest opinion. Buy the Slayer's Collection if you really want the complete series. But I would recommend buying the remake of Doom instead. After all, Doom 3 wasn’t very popular during its original release and I’m not sure how many people appreciate retro gaming anyway. The gameplay is much better in the Doom remake and you can download it digitally on the cheap. God of War is probably one of the best games on the PlayStation 4. In fact, it might be one of the best games from the past decade. This game is a distant continuation of the original God of War franchise. Kratos is living in ancient Norway with his son, Atreus, and they’re embarking on a long journey. It’s a heartfelt adventure with amazing character development, incredible gameplay, stunning graphics, and a beautiful story. I wasn’t a fan of the previous God of War games, but this one is a refreshing change in direction. This game doesn’t have major problems to my recollection, but some of the RPG elements are inconsequential. God of War has a decent skill tree, but I didn’t notice anything significant about the other RPG elements, such as costumes, magical items, etc. This game focuses more on the story and combat than RPG elements. I highly recommend this game for anyone who owns a PlayStation 4. Sony has many great PlayStation exclusives, but this one certainly goes on the top of the list. God of War is a masterpiece and I really mean it. The Sinking City ties heavily to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. A private investigator travels to a dilapidated city to investigate a murder. Strangely, it seems like the city is overrun with otherworldly creatures. I find the world building a creative twist on the post-apocalyptic genre with a literal sinking city and an infestation of nightmarish monsters. It also has interesting mystery elements. However, this game has tons of flaws. The animation seems outdated, the voice acting is quite bland, the investigation elements are confusing, and the overall gameplay is clunky. It takes combinations of action-adventure games, RPGs, and mysteries. The basic concept is cool, but the execution is bad. None of the elements come together very well and the game lacks polish. It’s hard to master the controls and the story lacks interesting characters. In the end, The Sinking City is very disappointing. I’m a big fan of post-apocalypse and H.P. Lovecraft, which means it takes quite an effort to sour me from this type of game. Most gamers could easily skip this title, but you may purchase a used copy if the concept sounds interesting enough. Welcome to the chaos of Borderlands 3! The game still takes place on a dystopian planet called Pandora. If you really like the previous Borderlands games, this one will probably satisfy you. The latest game in the series continues to offer great humor, awesome weapons, and good open world elements. It’s very silly in all the right ways. What if you’re not a big fan of the Borderlands series? This one won’t change your mind. In fact, I think the franchise gets weaker with each release. I’m only a fan of the original Borderlands game. This one largely caters to the multiplayer crowd. The single player campaign isn’t particularly interesting and the franchise is becoming very redundant at this point. Most of the Borderlands games look the same to me. The gameplay is probably serviceable enough to satisfy fans of first person shooters and RPGs. I recommend it for hardcore Borderlands fans, but it’s probably not worth the money for casual gamers. Borderlands 3 isn’t a bad game, but it’s not very memorable. It’s just another first person shooter with a bare bones storyline. Personally, I recommend Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition instead, but Borderlands 3 is available if you’re curious. I’m ending this post with a survival horror game called The Evil Within 2. A former detective is searching for his missing daughter in a post-apocalyptic landscape that’s full of sadistic murderers and demonic creatures. The Evil Within 2 is a really good improvement in the series with better gameplay, an open world environment, and more RPG elements. I found the graphics decent for a Bethesda release and the general experience is quite frightening. This game is intense and challenging with an onslaught of horrors, but you’ll probably find just enough ammo and health items to survive. I wasn’t a fan of the original Evil Within, but this one is an excellent survival horror release.
The story has many plot holes and some gamers will probably become frustrated. After all, it’s a tough game and enemies can easily overwhelm players. If you prefer the original Evil Within, this sequel will probably feel like a step down. They’re drastically different games. Is the voice acting better in The Evil Within 2? I would say yes, but it’s not fabulous by any means. I believe The Evil Within 2 is an excellent step in the right direction with a great combination of terror and challenging gameplay. This survival horror game will make you feel like a champion. I just don’t recommend it for gamers who scare easily. Thanks for reading my most recent game reviews.
