Good evening! It’s the beginning of October and you can celebrate Halloween all month long with a variety of streaming originals and syndicated programs. I still think cutting the cord is the future of television and we have many options. What kinds of shows do you prefer for the Halloween season? I have a list of scary, family friendly, and unusual tv shows that should keep you entertained. Have fun!
1) American Horror Story How to Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu - This horror anthology series has a different theme every season. AHS is frightening, intriguing, and controversial. Some viewers might be uncomfortable with parts of the subject matter, so I definitely recommend it for fans of edgier television. Are you looking for witches, haunted houses, serial killers, or post-apocalyptic futures? This show has it all with plenty of unexpected twists. You can also watch its sibling series, called American Horror Stories, on Hulu. 2) Castle Rock How to Watch: Hulu - Here’s a strange series that should appeal to fans of Stephen King. Like AHS, this show has a different theme each season. Castle Rock isn’t a direct adaption of Stephen King’s work, but it showcases several infamous characters, such as Annie Wilkes from Misery. Each season has an original story and opens the doorway to a Stephen King streaming universe. The pacing is kind of slow, but the content works pretty well for Halloween. 3) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina How to Watch: Netflix - This darker and weirder version of Sabrina: The Teenage Witch is an interesting YA adaptation with surprisingly violent content. Don’t expect to watch the happy, comedic, and lighthearted version of Sabrina from the ordinal tv show. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has a big emphasis on the occult and topical commentaries. If you’re looking for a different take on witchcraft, give it a shot. 4) Evil How to Watch: Netflix and Paramount+ - Demons and other supernatural entities walk among us in this supernatural drama. It has some monster of the week episodes, but demons are definitely the focal point. I find this show fascinating because it’s like an homage to The Exorcist and the writing is pretty strong. It’s surprisingly creepy for a show that originally aired on CBS. I believe Evil might hit the spot for many Halloween viewings. 5) The Haunting of Hill House How to Watch: Netflix - I can’t say this anthology series is one of my favorite horror shows, but it’s very fitting for the Halloween season. Hill House was season one, followed by The Haunting of Bly Manor for a second season. Both of these shows have dark, melancholic, and spooky settings. They’re a combination of the horror and mystery genres. Bly Manor is also a supernatural romance. Basically, if you want to watch tv shows about haunted houses, Hill House and Bly Manor should scratch your itch. 6) Hannibal How to Watch: Hulu - Who can forget Hannibal the cannibal from Silence of the Lambs? This prequel show is brutally violent with exceptional writing and a great cast. I’m going to be honest. It’s one of the most violent and gruesome shows I’ve ever seen, so keep that part in mind. With that said, Mads Mikkelsen is a worthy successor to Anthony Hopkins, so watch this show if you dare. 7) I Know What You Did Last Summer How to Watch: Amazon Prime - This reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer will premiere on October 15th. Naturally, I don’t know much about it, but the commercials looks like a relatively faithful, although reimagined, version of the original film series. I’m sure it will appeal t0 teenagers and anyone who enjoys old fashioned slasher movies. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint us. 8) Lovecraft Country How to Watch: HBO Max - Here’s a great miniseries for Lovecraft fans. It has monsters, magic, and really eye opening social commentaries. Lovecraft Country is a multidimensional horror series with a couple of subplots and a strong version of Lovecraftian horror. Sometimes the events in this show don’t make a lot of sense, but that’s typical of Lovecraftian horror. This show is just long enough without overstaying its welcome, although I found the ending a bit weak. If you want an entirely unique viewing experience, check it out. 9) Midnight Mass How to Watch: Netflix - Describing this miniseries is a difficult task. Midnight Mass has darkly religious themes, but you don’t have to be a person of faith to enjoy this show. It also includes elements from vampire lore and real life cults. I wish this show was more frightening, but it’s still creepy enough and let’s just say monsters take on different forms. Midnight Mass is a brand new series, so you might want to prioritize this one before everyone spoils it. 10) Monsterland How to Watch: Hulu - Truthfully, I haven’t watched this anthology series yet, but it looks like a decent monster of the week viewing. Each episode features a different protagonist and monster. I suppose Monsterland wasn’t popular enough to generate a second season, but it should be a fun Halloween watch. 11) Monsters at Work How to Watch: Disney+ - Many of you are probably searching for a less scary tv show and Monsters at Work should be wholesome entertainment for the entire family. It’s a spinoff of the Monsters Inc. movies with several new and returning characters. The episodes aren’t particularly long and it’s a fun way to watch monsters without scares, gore, or adult content. Plus, it still fits the Halloween spirit for this time of year. 12) NOS4A2 How to Watch: Hulu - This show is probably one of the weirdest versions of vampire lore on television. It appears to have some influences from Stranger Things and old fashioned creature mythology. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but NOS4A2 is unique enough to keep a viewers attention, even though it jumps the shark a number of times. 13) The Originals How to Watch: Netflix - I would say this show is the best entry in the Vampire Diaries universe. It’s a prime time soap opera that features vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings. This show is probably a good viewing for mainstream audiences because it’s definitely a creature feature without being overly scary. The characters are fleshed out and the writing is better than the Vampire Diaries or Legacies. Go ahead and take your pick because all of these shows are available on Netflix. 14) Penny Dreadful How to Watch: Showtime - This gothic horror series is one of my favorite monster shows. It features a dark Victorian setting with Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, werewolves, demonic possession, and other supernatural elements. Overall, the writing is excellent and the cast really stands out. I feel like the ending was rushed, but it still worked. Penny Dreadful was popular enough to launch a spinoff series, called City of Angels. If you’re interested, subscribe to the Paramount+ and Showtime bundle. It’s the most economic way to watch either streaming service. 15) Scream How to Watch: Netflix - I find this show nostalgic for people who enjoy slasher films. It takes place in the Scream universe with a completely different cast, including a new protagonist, victims, and killers. Each season has a different murderer, so it’s not just retreading the same material. Despite being a departure from the Scream movies, this show still feels authentic to the franchise’s general fun factor, death scenes, and campiness. Watch this show for entertainment value, not substance. 16) Scream Queens How to Watch: Hulu - If you’re looking for a funnier and sillier Halloween watch, Scream Queens is the right choice. It takes some cues from Scream and similar works, but it’s mostly a parody with an all star cast. Again, I’m trying to avoid spoilers. Sometimes this show was a little bit too stupid for my taste, but it’s an entertaining watch and I believe laughs are equally important to screams on Halloween. 17) Sleepy Hollow How to Watch: Hulu - This version of Sleepy Hollow definitely isn’t faithful to the original legend. However, it’s still a very entertaining show that expands the Headless Horseman mythology into a full blown tv series with demons, monsters, and apocalyptic themes. I’m giving this show big points for creativity and originality. It probably ran for too many seasons, but the premise always remained interesting. 18) Stranger Things How to Watch: Netflix - Halloween is always the right time to watch Stranger Things. We’re not getting season four until next year, but the first three seasons are ready to binge now. It’s a nice blend of 80s throwbacks, inter dimensional monsters, and teenage antics. The cast of kids become older with each season, but the show still works and never loses it’s unconventional charm. This show is a special little gem, although viewers need a decent threshold for violence and gore. 19) Supernatural How to Watch: Netflix - I can’t believe this show ran for fifteen seasons. It was one of the longest running shows on The CW. As expected, this show is a supernatural drama that features all kinds of creatures, ranging from ghosts, vampires, werewolves, demons, and more. The central story is about two brothers who go through an epically tragic and difficult journey that includes monster hunting, death, disappointment, a war between angels and demons, and the Apocalypse. Some seasons were better than others, but it finished on a high note and you can binge the entire series from beginning to end. 20) Teen Wolf How to Watch: Amazon Prime and Hulu - Here’s another YA drama that can appeal to teenagers and adults. Werewolves are the central characters, but it also includes many additional creatures of folklore. This show is considerably more serious than the Teen Wolf movie. However, this show is still a lot of fun and full of surprises. Halloween is the right time to watch this type of series. That’s the end of my Halloween recommendations. My list should give you a wide variety of options for Halloween fun during the entire month of October. What are you planning to binge for the Halloween season? Are you venturing to any Halloween parties this year? Leave your answers in the comment section. COVID-19 is still being a thorn in our sides, so be careful and don’t let it spoil the fun. Take care and I’ll see you guys again next week.
